A bloody battle is raging in Eastern Congo over the illegal charcoal trade that is killing the region's great apes. Specially trained wildlife officers have attacked and destroyed hundreds of illegal charcoal kilns deep in the forest in a bid to disrupt the environmentally devastating industry.

A woman has been found infected with a new strain of HIV virus! The virus probably originates from chimpanzees and has only recently been discovered in western gorillas in the wild. It is suggested that the virus was transmitted independantly to gorillas and humans.
