This documentary film starts with the history of the steelmaking process, explaining the operation of the blast furnace and the open hearth furnace. It goes on to cover many other aspects of steelmaking process and to illustrate many of the applications of steel mill products.

A blast furnace is a type of metallurgical furnace used for smelting to produce industrial metals, generally iron. They existed in China from about the 5th century BC, and in the West from the High Middle Ages. They spread from the region around Namur in Belgium in the late 15th century.
