Glyphosate has become the dominant herbicide worldwide. There are several reasons for its success. Glyphosate is a highly effective broad- spectrum herbicide, yet it is very toxicologically and environmentally safe. It translocates well, and its action is slow enough to take advantage of this.

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that glyphosate is unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans and the evidence does not support classification with regard to its carcinogenic potential according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

This review was undertaken to produce a current and comprehensive safety evaluation and risk assessment for humans. It includes assessments of glyphosate, its major breakdown product (AMPA), its Roundup formulations, and the predominant surfactant (POEA) used in Roundup formulations worldwide.

The mechanisms of toxicity of glyphosate formulations are complicated. It is used as different salts and formulations contain surfactants, which vary in nature and concentration. Human poisoning with this herbicide is not with the active ingredient alone but with complex and variable mixtures.
