Static Infographics and Motion Graphics are great, but Interactive Visualizations are where all the fun is.

The map shown here visualizes the localized stream of collaborations between researchers in different cities that are usually represented in a very symbolic or schematized way, aggregated at the country level.

The connectedness within biological systems are described by networks. This data structure naturally captures the interdependency of a system’s elements. Many general algorithms are available to productively study the structure of networks.

A hairball visualization of the network tells us as much about the network, as about the mammoth – not much at all.

Exploring data sets and communicating your findings are two different activities. Typically, the same visualization approach does not suit both. Exploratory visualizations are too complex to communicate. Communicative visualizations cannot be created until data is explored.
