After meeting ten PhD students, Arthur is determined to start a thesis. For this inter-season episode, he reveals his project to his family and friends, and tells them about his research subject. Then, he begins the lengthy process of finally becoming a PhD candidate.

On Thursday, 14 March, two dozen PhD candidates and young researchers from Paris West University Nanterre La Défense made their way through the snow to campus. Most of them are students in literature or human and social sciences.

For this third encounter for his report on doctoral students, Arthur enters a prestigious institution of research: the Pasteur Institute. Here, he meets Ferdinand Roesch, a researcher a virologist and, specifically, HIV researcher.

Its goal is to motivate the French astronomical community to think and discuss about what should be the training of PhDs, and what should be its objective. A worrying results from the poll is that the majority of the participants would not encourage a young student to start a thesis in astronomy.

Between 1998 and 2008, the number of PhD students increased by an average of 40% in OECD member countries. At the same time, job creation declined in the field of higher education and research.
